At the top right is shown the premises of the British Tabulating Machine Company. Throughout the Second World War, this company designed (under its chief engineer, Harold (Doc) Keen) and built the Turing Bombe code breaking machines used at Bletchley Park and, later, elsewhere to decipher enemy signals sent via their Enigma equipment.

See the map on page 7 of the English Heritage Research Report 39-2013 ( http://services.english-heritage.org.uk/ResearchReportsPdfs/039_2013WEB.pdf )for the locations of six Diver box light anti-aircraft batteries and a pillbox at Rosecourt Barn.
Operation Diver took place between June and September 1944. Diver was the code name for the German V1 flying bomb and Operation Diver was the co-ordinated raft of measures to overcome the threat that the V1s / Doodlebugs posed. Up to this point in the war, anti-aircraft batteries were fixed and permanent. Under Diver, temporary, mobile batteries were set up and moved to the areas of perceived threat. As a consequence, very little evidence remains to show where these were. MI5 safe house, 61 Richmond Park Road, Barnes. During 1944 this house, provided by MI5, was home for Roman Czerniawaski, aka Agent Brutus / Armand / Walenty (MI5), aka Agent Hubert (Abwehr, the Nazi foreign intelligence and espionage organisation) and his wife. Roman Czerniawaski was one of the key wartime agents involved in the Double Cross deception of Hitler and the German high command as to the place and timing of the invasion of France in 1944.

|
35 Crespigny Road, Hendon was used by MI5 as a safe house for double agent Juan Pujol Garcia and his family. Agent Garbo, as he was named by MI5 was a crucial member of the group of double agents involved in Operation Fortitude, the fictitious invasion of France across the Straights of Dover to the Pas de Calais. This involved feeding false information to the Abwehr and from there to the German high command and Hitler; this was so successful that the Germans believed it would still happen months after D-Day and so kept many German divisions away from the battle in Normandy.

This image shows the GPO's Research Centre, Dollis Hill. This site was vital for the work undertaken to design and build Colossus, the World's first electronic, programmable computer in 1943. This became an essential part of the work at Bletchley Park in deciphering codes that the Germans considered unbreakable.
Dollis Hill was also the site of Paddock, the reserve Cabinet War Room completed in 1940. |

From 1942 Cooling Radio Station was the first and only point in Britain at which secure shortwave radio telephone signals could be received from the US. This enabled direct voice communication between Roosevelt and Churchill. Signals to the US were transmitted via Rugby.
To the North of the radio station was an Admiralty Station Y U-boat direction finding post, although nothing remained of this when the photo' was taken. |

During 1938, R.D. Brimmell, the Borough Engineer, put forward plans for a network of tunnels incorporating the old railway tunnel, to provide deep level air raid shelters. These were opened on the 1st June 1939 and provided accommodation for up to 60,000 people. There were 22 entrances including the lower railway tunnel entrance and one in Arklow Square which may both be seen on the photo (although I don't know the precise position of the Arklow Square entrance).

New Tavern Fort in the foreground:
'For a while early in WWII a light Anti-Aircraft gun and a Searchlight were mounted on the infilled 6 inch gun emplacements. There was also temporary sandbagged Light Machine gun positions nearby overlooking the river. Fort House became an office for the administration of local food rationing, but a German V2 Rocket fell nearby and the building was badly damaged and had to be demolished. The Victorian and 1904 Magazines were used as Air-Raid shelters for a while, then reportedly the Victorian Magazines were used as a temporary Civil Defence Control Centre and then as a radio relay or monitoring station, two high steel pylon towers were constructed for this purpose. An Air Raid Wardens post was also built near the ditch at the south end of the Fort, this was demolished in the 1980's.' http://www.medwaylines.com/newtavernfort.htm |

I've seen a number of the group's comments relating to sites around the Kent coast, but I can't see that anything has been posted relating to the sea forts off the Kent shore. I've already found these and pinned them, but I'll try to link them to this group too. |

See http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/w/welnetham/index.shtml The railway seems to have formed part of one of the Stop Lines as there are other pillboxes to the N and S. Interestingly the field of fire from this pillbox is facing SE apparently covering the A134. |

I can confirm that these are variant Type 24 pillboxes, of 'double decker' construction, with an enclosed base (presumed used for storage) and access to the upper level by means of an external ladder. I have marked another one which is just visible at the top of the image.
There are several of these around the perimeter of the site, of various heights depending on the lie of the land. Attached is a photo of one located in woodland at the north-west of the site. None of the structures within the factory perimeter are listed on Coflein. |

Although this has been described as a boat yard, it was in fact an aircraft factory.
In 1912 Hamble River Engineering Co and Luke & Co joined forces to build the HL1 floatplane which was never completed. The companies two sheds were requisitioned by the Admiralty in December 1914. Fairey Aviation was offered the site for the erection and testing of its seaplanes and moved in late 1917. Fairey Aviation continued to use the site until 1945 when it was transferred to an associated boat building company,Fairey Marine, however, aircraft production and conversion continued on the site until at least 1955. |

e10311 An emergency battery of two 12-pounder guns emplaced in August 1940, one on each of the inner pier heads. Initially B Battery, 509 Coast Regt; later 265 Coast Battery RA. This was a difficult command due to the need to detour several miles through Sunderland to get from No.1 Gun on the north pier to No. 2 Gun on the south pier. Despite this, during a 1941 tour of inspection, it is described as a 'good battery' with a note that it lacked a command post and overhead covers. Placed in care and maintenance in April 1944, abandoned December 1944.

Welcome to the group fender. I'm sure you are already aware of the Pillbox Study Group and its mission to continue the work of the Defence of Britain project and the resulting EDoB database that I maintain. But if not the google earth format database can be found here

Hello to group members. I have joined the group this morning 30.1.14
May I seek comments on a structure around RAF Filton and the Aircraft Factory just north of Bristol. I have located 3 such structures including the one about 150 yards from my home when I was a lad of 7 years old. One such structure is to be found in image EAW004188. Just above dead centre and a little to the left is a tower and a white building presumably to house the operators. I have drawn blanks from my RBL friends from various military backgrounds. kent2 |

Hi kent2 and welcome to the group. You have discovered a Bofors Tower which would have had a 40mm Bofors AA gun on top of it for airfield defence. You obviously know the locations of another two so if there are images that show them please add them to the group and I will add them to the ED0B overlay with credit to you.
Cheers Steve |
