Isle of Grain, this fortification was named Dummy Battery. Proposed 1860, in 1869 problems were encountered during the build with subsidence and cracking. Originally intended to mount twelve 64 lbs smooth bore guns, this was changed to two 11" rifled muzzle loaders which were replaced by two 4.7" QF guns by 1899. Not recorded as used in WW1 or WW2. For the source of this and further info see: http://www.medwaylines.com/graindummybattery.htm Although not visible in this photo, immediately to the right is Grain Tower, and to the right of that was Wing Battery and Grain Fort. For a six inch to the mile OS map of the area, see: http://maps.nls.uk/view/101428254
