This building, along with the church and others along the High Street, was bombed during WWII, and one house was being built in 1935. Therefore, the date of the photo (1949) has to be wrong. The 2nd picture shows Red Funnel's Lorna Doone berthing in the late 1930s with the pier intact. There is no record of when the collapse happened but after the Second World War the pier was not repaired and re-opened until 1953 when the first call was made by the rather inaptly named Cardiff Queen on a day trip from Brighton on 25th May. This site is RAF Ventnor at St Boniface Down. These three wooden towers, each 240 feet high, were the receiver towers completed in October 1938 as part of the Chain Home radar project authorised by the government in 1937. The radar station was comprised of three steel 350 foot transmitter towers, the foot of one can just be seen on the far right of the photo', plus the receiver towers shown here. The site was attacked by the Luftwaffe on the 12th August 1940 and put out of action until repaired.
