Hungerford station on the former GWR main line from Reading to Westbury and further west. At the date of the photo it had been in the care of BR's Western Region for just over a year.

Hungerford lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Bought up by the GWR in 1852, the canal lost much traffic, and the last through passage took place in 1951, only two years after this photo was taken. The canal was slowly restored over the last three decades of the 20th Century, and once again can be navigated from end to end.
