Barnfield Road, which at this time continued, uninterrupted, as far as the junction with Denmark Road. The road was split into two parts by the construction of the Inner Bypass in the early 1960s.

The Horse Chestnut tree that still exists, but is now much larger.

Chorister Alley. A narrow alley that runs between number 9 and 10 Cathedral Close. Named Chorister Alley because before 1942 it lead to the Choristers' School. On 4th May 1942 the Choristers' School was destroyed in the worst night of bombing. The alley has kept its name, but now serves as a short cut between the cathedral Close and the Bedford Street area.

The Choristers' School. On 4th May 1942 Exeter suffered a heavy air-raid as part of the notorious Baedeker Blitz and the Choristers' School, along with the neighbouring Abbot's Lodge, received a direct hit from a high-explosive bomb. Both buildings were totally destroyed. Fortunately it was the Easter holiday, so all of the choristers had gone home.

The Abbot's Lodge. Originally owned by the Abbots of Buckfast and dating back to at least the 1400s. On 4th May 1942 Exeter suffered a heavy air-raid as part of the notorious Baedeker Blitz and the Abbot's Lodge, along with the adjacent Choir School, received a direct hit from a high-explosive bomb. Four people in the building at the time were killed and the Abbot's Lodge was totally destroyed.

St Mary Major. Rebuilt several times, but the last building of real historic value was demolished by the Victorians in 1865 and replaced with the building that appears in this photograph. After the re-housing of the poorest area of Exeter, the West Quarter, to the new estate of Burnthouse Lane in the 1930s, the population of central Exeter was considerably less, and the congregation of St Mary Major dwindled. As the newest church building in central Exeter, hence the one with least historical interest, it was declared redundant and finally demolished in 1971. Subsequent excavations of the site have revealed the remains of a Roman bath house, which is currently covered over to preserve it. Several attempts have been made over the years to raise sufficient funds to open up the Roman remains for all to see, but so far have failed.

St Mary Major Church. Central to the life of the St Mary Major parish since medieval times the church was inexplicably demolished in the 1970's to give a better view of Exeter Cathedral.
