1920 was the first year the Southend Watermen began to operate the new motor boats as pleasure launches from the beach for holidaymakers. Hayward of Southend built one or two locally to go into service that season - which may have been either the 2 "San Toys" or the "Julia Freak" for the new Southend Motor Navigation Co.Ltd [owned by L.E.Golding of Shoeburyness] , and Cook's Boatyard of the Hythe,, Maldon, build the 40ft ML "Grace darling" for G. Gundy,[who had owned a sailing yawl of the same name pre-War] to operate from the beach "in front of the Kursaal". If any local historian is certain of the names of the two motor launches in the picture, I would be very grateful to hear from them. |
