This house is believed to have been built late 15thC a detached timber-framed dwelling for a wealthy merchant. At some time the exterior facing the street (White Hart Street) was plastered over concealing the studded timber work. In 1867 the exterior plaster was removed revealing once again the timbers. The house was purchased in the early 1920s by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh to be converted into a museum for the town of Thetford. Known as the Ancient House Museum it opened in 1924 and today continues as the Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life. |

The King's House is reputed to have been the manor house of Thetford's medieval maonorial lords. The house is unrecognisable from that sketched by Thomas Martin in the middle of the 18thC. The house was owned by James I and in the 17thC came into private ownership. It was rebuilt c1763 after it was bought by Thomas Wright. For much of the 19thC it was owned by the Fison family. After the death of George Wild Staniforth in 1947 the house and garden were bequeathed to the town of Thetford. Since 1952 it has been the offices and chambers of Thetford Borough Council (since 1972 Thetford Town Council). |
