' This house is believed to have been built late 15thC a detached timber-framed dwelling for a wealthy merchant. At some time the exterior facing the street (White Hart Street) was plastered over concealing the studded timber work. In 1867 the exterior plaster was removed revealing once again the timbers. The house was purchased in the early 1920s by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh to be converted into a museum for the town of Thetford. Known as the Ancient House Museum it opened in 1924 and today continues as the Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life. '
