This appears to be a new glasshouse under construction ... newly painted structure but as yet no roof trusses or glass. I wonder how well the investment served the coming hostilities being prepared for at the next door factory. |

Photo EW027916, taken in 1948, shows these greenhouses in use and considerably developed further. The orchard trees have mostly disappeared and the land cultivated. I assume all this was done to enhance home food production during the war. |

I completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker in 1966 at this factory. Looking back a very good comprehensive training scheme. The photo shows a small plaque made up by my friends at my time of leaving. I now live in Perth Western Australia. |

Yes, this is an LMS engine, but it came from the Midland Railway. It is one of the unsuperheated later Deeley Compounds with shallow frames with 7ft driving wheels. Similar locomotives built by the LMS had 6ft 9" driving wheels. It would have been in LMS crimson, line out in straw and with black borders. |

Here's a great example of Aerofilms Ltd A.R.P. work. In 1938 the company was commissioned by the Home Office to take photographs of key factories to assist preparations for home defence. This Air Raid Precautions contract continued right through to August 1939 until the declaration of war grounded civilian flying. You can see how this factory has stacked sand bags up to protect the front entrance; and air raid shelters are under construction beside the building (on the right hand side of the photo). The RAF, in the meantime, was taking air photos of factories and the like that interested the Air Ministry, for exactly the same purpose. |
