Us local kids called this Tennants Field, after the Chemical Company that had moved from this area. |

This was the Newcastle Shipbuilding Companies, Platers Shed. It was later bought by a Gateshead company called 'Reay' and became the 'Reay Gear Works'.
In the 1960s it was RW Transmissions who also made gear wheels and gearboxes for Industry. I worked there as a Fitter for 6 or 7 years. |

This was originally called 'James St' but to honour Queen Victoria's husband Albert it was changed to 'Prince Consort Rd'. |

The Newcastle Shipbuilding Co started their shipyard here in 1919 after buying Huntley's old shipyard that was here previously. Then they added 4 extra Berths to Huntley's three giving 1600ft of river frontage. Then just 2 yrs later they went bust. The buildings which were the Platers Sheds were eventually bought by the Reay Gear Works at the end of the 20s. |

This was Cuthbert St. The Relief Office was at 2 & 4 Cuthbert St. My grandparents John & Cecilia Rodger lived above the Relief Office. My mother was 12 in 1933 so family could be among those people looking up at the aircraft wondering why it's flying around Hebburn. |

When we were children in the late 40s into the 50s this land was rough grass/weeds where nature had taken over. We called it Tennant's Field . |

This shows the edge of the old Reservoir which was part of the Tennant's Chemicals or possibly the Bauxite works. Not a lot is known about the Bauxite works in Hebburn, but bauxite ore is where aluminium is extracted from. |

In the 1940s this building was 'Martin's Bank' which later became Barclays. Today it still stands virtually unchanged but now a funeral home. This photo from my website shows the building in the background |

This house was called 'Tyne View Tce' & it was owned by Tennant's Chemical Works. By this photo Tennant's had left & the factory & buildings were being demolished. Tyne View wasn't demolished & it was rented out to three tenants as it was 3 separate properties. My McNeill relations lived in the one closest to Prince Consort RD & they moved into the house in the 1930s & stayed until the 1950s. The photo shows Tyne View high up on the riverside with the three chimneys.. |

The 'Relief' Office was here on the downstairs part. My gran lived upstairs to it & watched queues stretching down the backyard & into the lane as out of work men queued to get money to feed their family. |
