Canal horse stables. Used to change horses when barges were travelling along the Bridgewater Canal.
In the attached picture the entrance to the stables can be seen under the arch. Fodder was stored on the upper floor. A steam tug pulling a very heavily laden barge can be seen travelling eastwards having passed under the Altrincham Bridge which carries the A56 from Chester towards Manchester. In the feint distance is the 1833 Canal Warehouse, now a listed building. |

Starting point of the passenger service into Manchester and Runcorn which started from the first day the Bridgewater Canal arrived in Broadheath in 1767. Passenger barges entered the building where passengers could board. The Packet Inn stands at the side so passengers could refresh themselves while waiting. The service into Manchester took two hours and was drawn by two horses with a postillion at a speed of over 5 miles per hour.
The building is still there but has been lowered by one floor. On this photo it looks like it has no roof, possibly fire damage as it is so extensive. |

Broadheath Wharfs from when the Bridgewater Canal arrived in 1767. This was one of several Coal Wharfs in the area around where the Turnpike Road crossed the Bridgewater.Canal.
Today this is the site of The Mansion House, a very smart office building owned by local company the Sheldon Group. |
