| I think this is the first post-War replacement for the Southend Motor navigation Co.s 60ft Princess maud, lost during the Dunkirk Evation in late may, 1940.The SMNCo had a small 32ft single screw ML built by Walter Cook & Son on the Maldon Hythe, with War Loss Compensation, -which they ran for a couple of Seasons before the larger replacement "New Princess Maud" was launched. This smaller boat was then sold-off to an Operator on Canvey Island. | bargee1937 | Tuesday 23rd of August 2022 07:42:30 PM |

| This little Motor Pleasure boat may be the "Skylark II" owned by Charles & Arthur Myall, - who also owned the "Southend Britannia" and the "(New)Britannia I". All three were requisitioned by the RN under Ministry Of Shipping Charter Form T.691 and T.98, - on 28th May,1940 for service during the Dunkirk evacuation.
"Skylark II" is noted as having been damaged during that work, and subsequently repaired by the well-known Boatbuilders Tough's of Teddington. | bargee1937 | Saturday 27th of June 2015 11:26:03 AM |
| Probably the Bawley "Valerie", LO180, owned by Brand & Wilson. The mooring is about where I remember her anchorage to have been. | bargee1937 | Saturday 20th of June 2015 05:28:10 PM |
| I know this is the "Dreadnought" owned by J. Polkinghorn, I think, and locally-built in 1936 for passenger-carrying service off this foreshore. Didn't get requisitioned on May 28th, 1940, for Dunkirk for some reason; but was taken-up for RN service as a Harbour tender later during the War. | bargee1937 | Saturday 20th of June 2015 05:24:53 PM |
| I know this is the "New prince Of Wales 1" - a survivor of the Operation Dynamo little ships - 9one of 12 Southend pleasure boats requisitioned by the RN on 28th May, 1940, and retained for the rest of the war as an inshore minesweeper. | bargee1937 | Saturday 20th of June 2015 05:21:41 PM |
| Is this the "BRITISH QUEEN"? | bargee1937 | Saturday 20th of June 2015 05:18:53 PM |

| If anyone knows the names of any of these beach excursion boats, and has better pictures of them, then I'd love to hear from you.The picture shows 8 motor launches, what may have been the very last of the famous double-ended 60ft long "sailing lifeboats", - and three smaller sailing vessels. please contact lhjw66576ATyahooDOTcoDOTuk if you can help. Given the 1946 date, my memory tells me that there may have been the "New Prince Of Wales 1"[side-on to the jetty in the middle of the picture]; the "Dreadnought" [stern on to the next beach landing stage downwards], one of the "Skylarks", and possibly the "British Queen" [stern-on to the landing stage at the bottom of the picture. | bargee1937 | Saturday 20th of June 2015 05:17:28 PM |
