Two different reports give either 1931, or 1935, as the opening dates for the cinema. Pre-war, it was one of the largest cinemas in Britain with 3600 seats. 1953 the Plaza was the first independent cinema in the UK, to install the new Cinemascope, and Stereophonic sound systems. The cinema closed 1965, and was soon demolished, and Oceana, was erected, which within the next few weeks will itself be demolished. |
