In earlier times this was a Lead Works. On my 1895 Map it was a 'disused' Lead Works. Don't know what it was in 1936. |

The Reay Gear Works that started off in Hebburn very late 1920s or early 30s. The Sheds had previously been built as 'Platers Sheds' for the Newcastle Shipbuilding Co in 1919. Unfortunately the Company went bust after 2 yrs & the machinery & sheds stood unsold for years. Later George Angus took over the gear making business & later still Richardson Westgarth took over. Their name was RW Transmissions & they closed in the mid 1970s. The photo shows the Reay Gear Works about 1940 from the far side of the factory. |

Hebburn's old Ballast Hill where in previous times ships returning to the river for more cargo such as coal, copper ingots, chemicals etc would unload their ballast of sand/gravel. In later years ships used water as ballast. |
