This derelict land is where the Tennant's Chemical Works once was. It started in Hebburn about 1865 and eventually became the United Alkali Co. |

This was a fish'n'chip shop on Church St/Ann St corner. About 5 yrs after this photo was taken the profile of the rooftops on Ann St was changed forever as a German bomb demolished a couple of the houses. The gap where they once were is still there today as they were never rebuilt. Pics of it on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website |

These houses were called 'Tyne View Terrace' & previously belonged to the Tennant's Chemical Works where their managers lived. In the 40s & 50s after Tennant's were no longer in Hebburn my McNeill relatives lived in one of the houses. They had a tennis court, indoor bathroom, & even a telephone which was a left over from when Tennant's people lived there. The photo shows my aunt Jane McNeill in the garden at Tyne View. |

These sheds were built by the Newcastle Shipbuilding Company who started up in 1919 & went bankrupt 1921. They stood unused until the end of the 1920s when the Reay Gearworks took them over. Later Geo Angus took over & later still RW Transmissions. RWT closed down in the mid 70s & now the land is a Housing Estate. Photo from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website |
