Destroyed in the 1917 explosion, silo D was to the same design as the neighbouring silos A, B and C seen repaired and still standing. Here, the replacement for silo D still has scaffolding around the tower top, but 4 years after the blast, is nearing completion. Note that a large letter D is clearly visible in the shade at the top of the recessed section of the building. |

Silvertown explosion site, 19 Jan 1917. 73 died & over 400 injured when 50 tons of TNT accidentally detonated. The crater remained for many years. The smart building behind the crater appears to be new, perhaps admin offices to replace those lost?
