The Montgomeryshire Canal reached Newtown in 1821. The canal basin was well equipped by the 1850s - with 45 wharf-houses, six or more warehouses, twenty-one or more stables, docks including a dry dock, a foundry and caalside flannel factories. For more information on the basin see:
