There are details on this memorial at www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.6627/fromUkniwmSearch/1, but unfortunately no names of the soldiers.

This has no connection with Lutyens' London cenotaph - where is your reference?

Copied from Coflein (the online database for the National Monuments Record of Wales)...

"The memorial on the Esplanade, Mumbles Road, Swansea, is a war memorial after Lutyens’ Whitehall cenotaph designed by Ernest E Morgan, borough architect of Swansea. The foundation stone was laid 1 July 1922 by Field Marshall Earl Haig, and it was unveiled 21 July 1923 by Sir F C Doveton Sturdee, Admiral of the Fleet.

The memorial is on a stepped base, and the central Portland stone cenotaph has a stylised tomb-chest, and bronze low relief wreaths to the narrow sides with the dates 1914-1918’ and ‘1939-1945’; the broad sides have (facing the sea) a bronze relief of an anchor in a wreath, and (to the land) the Swansea arms below which the inscription: ‘Pro Deo Rege et Patria’. The cenotaph precinct is surrounded by an octagonal wall with four entrances, with the outer faces of wall in grey stone (with flower beds) and the inner faces having copings and entrance piers in Portland stone. The inner faces of the wall bear bronze plaques with names of the fallen, and stones recording the foundation and unveiling. It is a fine example of monument type in prominent position."

I have photographed all of the name tablets on the War Memorial. If I have inadvertently missed any

I apologise in advance but I was methodical in taking the photographs. It should be possible to find any name.

"The Rec." i.e. recreation ground; site, in my day in the early 1970s and probably back at the time of this picture too, of Brynmill's incredibly noisy fair in Easter and Spring Bank Holiday weeks, and in August. Also the occasional circus.

"Mumbles Train"/"Tren y Mwmbwls" track - the old tramway along the bay, originally opened in 1806, and closed and dismantled in 1960, after it had been taken over by South Wales Transport (one of the local bus companies!) a couple of years earlier. As the picture seems to show overhead gantries, this photo must have been taken some time after the electrification of the line in 1928.
