Top left corner -the tenements of Craigielea, and above those a corner of the reasonably new Ferguslie Park 'Housing Sceme'. The white houses to the right again are Prefabs, later replaced by precast concrete blocks of flats and now demolished, the ground lain to waste. The Branch line running from the main Glasgow-Gourock Line was the former Paisley and Barrhead District Railway, which then became part of the Caledonian Railway. It was known as the 'Dummy Railway' because although it encircled Paisley and branched to Barrhead, it never actually ran any passenger service, infact stopping short of rejoining the main line east of Paisley Gilmour St (see http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sealed/paisley/railpage/pbdr.htm for full interesting history). The line also served the former Rootes Car plant and Pressed Steel plant, home of the Hillman Imp, until the late 70's. The football ground in the foreground was I believe the home of Glenvale United. |
