Rochdale Canal. This crossed in front of the church's west end in a bit of a cutting where there was a lock - see, for example, the 6inch:1mile from 1931 at https://maps.nls.uk/view/100947554 |

Christ Church. The diverted Tuel Lane passes near to the West end of the church. Nearby the Rochdale Canal passes under Tuel lane in a new tunnel and then rises in the canal system's deepest lock. |

Rochdale Canal. Last used by commercial traffic over its full length in 1937. Abandoned by Act of Parliament in 1952 except for two miles in central Manchester. Eventually reopened throughout in the late 1990s. |

Tuel Lane. This is the original route of Tuel Lane down from the sharp bend. This stretch of road is now called Tower Hill and is a cul-de-sac where the sharp bend is shown on this photograph. Tuel Lane was re-routed to meet Wharf Street at Christ Church, to follow a less severe gradient and eliminate the sharp bend. |

Sowerby Bridge - the early stone bridge is still visible under more recent additions. An important crossing point of the River Calder. The print by Horner shows the old chapel pulled down in the early C19 when Christchurch was built. |
