The pier opened on 29 March 1869. Sir John Betjamin thought it the most beautiful pier in England. It was Listed Grade I in 2001. Paddle steamers from P & A Campbell's White Funnel fleet used to call here. Structural stress testing carried out in 1970 for insurance purposes led to the collapse of two spans and the pier was closed for some years and it was not fully restored and opened to the public until 1998. The Clevedon Pier Preservation Society, formed in 1972, had campaigned for its restoration
