The site of one of the last remaining City parish 'Watch-houses' still exists here and its' location is recorded by a stone inscription near the eastern side of the church. Watchhouses were the fore-runners of police stations and the City police force which began in 1839, ten years later than the Metropolitan force which was founded in Sept 1829. They were manned by unpaid men of the parish to keep order and maintain the peace. |

The 'Fat boy' effigy recording facts about the Great Fire of 1666. The inscription beneath reads "This boy in memmory(!) put up for the late Fire of London occasion'd by the Sin of Gluttony 1666". There is a further inscribed stone below which additionally reads "The Golden boy of Pye Corner". The boy at pie corner was erected to commemorate the staying of the great fire which beginning at Pudding Lane was ascribed to the sin of gluttony when not attributed to the papists as on the monument, and the boy was made prodigiously fat to enforce the moral. He was originally built into the front of a public house called the 'Fortune of War' which used to occupy this site and was pulled down in 1910. The inscription continues further as well. |
