After WW2 this area on the far side of the Royal Exchange was rebuilt and became the home of Marks and Spencers Department Store. After the devastation of the 1996 bomb, this was rebuilt, initially as the largest M&S store, but it proved too large and they now occupy half, the other half is a Selfridge store.

The Royal Exchange, formerly a Cotton Exchange with trading floor, the large open floor area now contains a stand alone theatre. Originally built 1874, doubled in size 1922, bombed in WW2 and reconstructed. The 1996 IRA bomb moved the building some inches but it was again restored. This building was used in the opening sequence of Season one of the Harry Worth show, (the famous window X reflection) where St Anns Church can just be seen in the background.

The patron Saint is Anne (with an E), mother of Mary, but the church is named Ann without an E after the patron Ann, Lady Bland. Consecrated in 1712, when it was in the Diocese of Chester. When Manchester was given its own Cathedral this church automatically transferred to the new Manchester diocese. Now a Grade 1 listed church.

This view is looking towards the North, with the main vertical road to the left being Deansgate and to the right, Cross Street. The central stub is St Anns Square. Many of the buildings remain in 2012 although the area immediately North of the Royal Exchange building was devastated by an IRA bomb in the 90's.
