Somewhere around here it was planned to have a station built by the Hull & Barnsley railway company. An extension from their goods yard in Cannon Street just to the north. It never happened, due to lack of funds but Cannon Street got the platforms and a turntable.

Time ball on the top of the clock tower. As with many other port cities, this would raise just before 1 pm each day and drop at 1 pm. This enabled the setting of timepieces on board ships in dock.
