I lived in the remains of this road in the early/mid sixties.

I remember the bottom half of the road were all Bomb damaged houses with only the top half of the road still intact.

Can anyone confirm whether this set of industrial buildings is the factory for Bentley Motors Ltd? The company was building cars in Cricklewood by 1921, the year this photo was taken.

These roads leading off West Hendon Broadway were some of the first to be developed around the turn of the century. Once the area started to become more urbanized, the use of the Welsh Harp and surrounding lands for recreation in the old ways ceased. During the Second World War some of these roads (including Ravenstone Road) were almost entirely destroyed by a Luftwaffe bomb in early 1941. The exact details and causes of the massive destruction that resulted is still slightly murky, but it is thought that a special and very powerful type of German bomb had been used. Others suggested that it was an aircraft laden with bombs that had fallen on the houses. Many were killed and injured. The Welsh Harp was drained and examined for further evidence many years later but little of significance seemed to emerge. Does anyone know more details about the West Hendon incident?

The Upper Welsh Harp is one of the oldest buildings still standing in West Hendon - it probably dates from the c1850s and was linked to the time when the Welsh Harp reservoir, River Brent and surrounding land was a Londoner's playground. It still stands but is now (2013) a restaurant type bar and re-named.

Hi colsouth111,

I don't suppose you know, or could work out, which building at The Hyde was taken on as offices by the Aircraft Operating Company Ltd and Aerofilms Ltd, in the mid-1920s? They called it "Aerial House". I've no idea if it was a house converted for office use, or an office or light-industrial building. Would really aprpeciate any help you can give on this puzzle!

Yours, Katy

Hello Katy

I considered this problem when I first saw you raise the question but couldn't find anything out about it. I will try again and also see if Mick willis, a former Aerofilms man knows anything when he returns from holiday.

I love the expanse of fields in this image as we look south towards Cricklewood.

At the bottom left we can just see part of the Schweppes mineral water factory. The Hyde lies just a little to the north, also embracing the Edgware Road. Can't recall seeing many pictures yet actually of the Hyde rather than Colindale, apart from one of the Duple coach factory.

Further to the Duple coach factory; the factory was built in 1926 when Duple moved from Hornsey. The factory was extended in 1934 when they bought Cowleaze House, which place I thought might have been a candidate for Aerial House.

Aerofilms Ltd had an office in "Aerial House" on The Hyde (Edgware Road) from 1924/5 to 1928/9. Does anyone know which building this was?
