gas storage barometer these are submerged in a deep water tank and as gas is produced from the gas ovens by baking coal to extract the tar and gas the gas is bubbled through the water and trapped in the cast iron flask that sits in the water tank this then rises with the volume of gas within also acting as a pressure to transport the gas around the town supply network. the tar produced was allowed to cool in 25lb cakes or larger quantities for storage or transporting and used for a variety of uses mainly road surface or repair by the use of a tar boiler which reheated the tar to a liquid to be spread on the road surface and granite chips rolled into working surface
