Next to what is now The Pantry delicatessen is the cottage where Grace Darling died on the 20th October 1842. The attached composite photo showing the plaque above the doorway was taken on the 16th October 2015.

Shipwrecks were common on this stretch of coastline and a Dr John Sharp (1722 - 1792) who was resident at the castle founded what is recognised as the first coastguard system in the world.
