I have nothing but fond memories of The White City Estate.I was born in Lawrence Close in 1948.Our family moved to Phipps House in June 1948 into a three bedroom flat.I particularly recall the SSAFFA Tattoos ,Royal International Horse Shows,Cavalcade of Sports and numerous other events including greyhound racing, that took place in the stadium. The streets, courtyards, greens and open spaces of the estate were our playgrounds and the lack of motor cars kept us safe back in the 1950's.Greyhound Finals Night was a magnet for cars parked on the estate and "Car minding" proved a great way of earning extra pocket-money for us local urchins.I still visit the estate often and I am impressed by the trees and flowers that give a lovely feel to the place in summer months.
