| Just for clarity - This is not a 'Liberty ship'. This is a 'Victory' class turbine steamer. Liberty ships were flush decked, had steam reciprocating machinery which produced a speed of 10 to 11 knots. The ship shown has a raised forecastle, had steam turbines which produced a speed of 15+knots. The 'Victory' ships, together with a series of 'C' class ships were designed to be faster so they could keep up with a 'fleet train' of warships to keep them supplied over the greater distances of the Pacific Ocean |
