The little Bridge built for the Tennant's Chemical Works rail line to get their products to & from the Staiths. That bridge was made from massive timbers & some of us kids played inside clambering through the timbers. The line went across the riverside road which was probably part of James St/Prince Consort Rd. That road is still there today at the bottom of Prince Consort Rd leading to the Marina. This is a rare photo of that Bridge & it's on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website.

The Theatre Royal on Lyon St. The rear doors were on Carr St. It opened as a Music Hall in 1897 & at one time Stan Laurel's father Arthur Jefferson managed it. I went to the Matinees they held on Saturday's in the late 1940s but I can't remember what it looked like as I was only 5 or 6.I lived 50 yds away across the road from it on Lyon St. My ambition is to obtain a good quality photo of it rather than the newspaper cutting I have. On Friday night Oct 6th 1950 a fire started inside the Theatre & by the 7th it had burned down. I never ever saw the next episode I had been looking forward to seeing at the time. (Might have been Marvelman or something as I cant remember). The cutting is from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website

The Ellison House Hotel that was on the corner of Prince Consort Rd & Lyon St. The only photo of it is on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website & it is a newspaper cutting from Oct 7th 1950 when the Theatre Royal next door burned down & the Hotel was extensively damaged. It re-opened but closed again not many years later.

These Sheds were originally the Newcastle Shipbuilding Company 'Plater's Sheds' but they went bankrupt in 1921. In 1925 the place was auctioned off & didn't sell so items were sold cheaply. The Reay Gear Works from Gateshead ended up with the Sheds & ran their gear wheel/gearbox manufacturing business there. Later it became George Angus Gears & later again Richard & Westgarth Transmissions. RWT ran it until the mid 1970s. I have lots of photos taken at RWT on my website www.oldtynside.co.uk . A modern housing estate stands on this land today in 20013

In the late 1940s early 1950s when I was a young lad Tharsis Sulpher & Copper Company had long gone. Only parts of the derelict concrete buildings were still standing. It was a playground for Hebburn kids. They'd moved out & left this deep unfenced reservoir. Today they would have been heavily fined for leaving it unfenced & full of water. In the early 50s I remember a lad about 9 or 10 called Colqhoun & he drowned in it one Saturday afternoon. In previous years other children had drowned in it so no lessons were learned. The reservoir was brick lined & the sides were angled steeply. It was a magnet for children fishing for sticklebacks & we knew it was dangerous. You couldn't see the bottom as it was so deep (9 mtrs deep ie 30ft)

This is the 'Argyle Hotel' known locally as 'The Clapps'. This was because an old Landlord called Clapperton managed it. The photo is from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website

This 1925 aerial view shows the Newcastle Shipbuilding Company which unfortunately went bankrupt about 1921. It had started just two years earlier with high expectations. The sheds were Plater's Sheds which later in the 1920s were taken over by the 'Reay Gear Works'.

This area was known locally as 'The Bauxite'. Not a lot is recorded about this 'British Aluminium Co' apart from it produced Aluminium Hydroxide from the ore known as 'Bauxite'. A lot of waste known as red mud was a by-product of the process & it was dumped on the site producing hillocks/mounds of this red mud. It was fenced off to keep people off it.

This reservoir belonged to one of the industries but I'm not sure eg the Bauxite or the Dye Works that had been there before Reyrolles started in 1901/2. It also could have been part of the Tennant's Chemical Co processes further down the bank but it was definitely NOT drinking water. As kids in the 50s we played at this reservoir either catching sticklebacks or playing on an old Raft. The reservoir wasn't deep but it may have been silted up by then.
