Could this be a British India Steamship,it appears to have a black funnel with the white bands. I visited these docks in 1962 with the British India ship M.V. Landaura |

RMS Queen Elizabeth - too big to use the landing stage at the Pier Head - note the buses meeting/visiting her. |

Are you sure? How about the second Mauretania - a more likely visitor to Liverpool. |

RMS Mauretania entered Gladstone Dock on release from war service Sept 1946 for reconversion to civilian configuration by Cammell Laird (who completed her at Birkenhead in 1938). Her outline was very much a slightly reduced Queen Elizabeth. |

According to Liverpoolships.org (http://www.liverpoolships.org/mauretania_1939_cunard_line.html), MAURETANIA entered Gladstone Dock for conversion after serving as a troopship back to civilian use on 2 September 1946, and left Liverpool on 18 April 1947 on her first post-war civilian sailing. This was the day after this photo was taken. |
