A small section of this slightly sloping, blue brick retaining wall is the only readily detectable surviving feature of all the mass of historic Midland Railway infrastructure seen in this view. The GWR has fared rather better, with much of the Central Station up platform remaining as well as the station subway.

1956. If this distant shot shows the railway line to South Wales, it was also the line to Northwest England. On occasions when Sunday travel from Bristol was necessary, the Severn Tunnel would be closed for essential maintenance. This meant a ride via Gloucester, with a very different view through the beautiful scenery from Grange Court by the single tracked line to Ross on Wye, and thence to Hereford to rejoin the route north to Crewe.
