Looking closely at this photo, it appears to be pre-mid 1930s as the new Grand Hotel hadn't been built, so the hotel on that spot would be the Great Western Hotel (pre-1930) Black Cock (pre 1900). It was known as the Railway Hotel circa 1930 until it was demolished in the mid-30s. The temperance hotel on the opposite corner was called the Grand up until circa 1930 when its name was changed to the Great Western Hotel. It hadn't always been a 'dry' hotel as for a time it utilised the Ty Melyn as the Grand Vaults.

This picture does again raise questions about how ‘Britain From Above’ is going to present the evidence provided by visitors to the site. Does it leave it as a 'conversation' that future visitors have to work through or does it go with the correct evidence - editing out misleading strands? If erroneous comments rest uncontested it is not a lot of help in identifying the scenes. Good work here has resolved the original error.

The fact this photo has been up this long with an inaccurate caption speaks volumes.

Bethesda Street can be seen running down to the Upper Strand with Bargeman's Row to the south, part of the way down. This would mean that the photograph is pre-1923/24 when the additional arches were built.

There were two main town centre stations in Swansea. This shot is of the Great Western Railway company High Street Station. The other station was Victoria Station, Swansea served by the London and Northwestern Railway and subsequently by the London Midland and Scottish Railway.

this is not the Victoria railway station which had just 2 platforms on oystermouth road where the leisure centre is now, this is the GWR station on high street with 5 platforms

Deffo High St. Station. See the old abattoir sheds in the top right hand edge of the picture just below Sea View terrace.

I really must point out that the above image IS NOT in fact Victoria Station at all. It is a picture of High Street Station. If you look closely, the Strand arches are visible. Also St.Matthew's Church can be seen in the upper part of High Street. At the front of the Station and to the right is Alexandra Road. If you follow Alexandra Road, the old Police Station can be seen. I was born and lived in the vicinity of the old Victoria Station so remember it well. York Place Baptist Church which backs onto Victoria Road was across the road from Victoria Station. The area at the front of the picture is in fact, what we today call Parc Tawe. Hope this information helps!
