A great image showing the crossings of the river at Conwy. The first bridge was Telford's suspension bridge, shown here on the right. The decking was replaced in 1896 but the suspension chains are originals. There is an additional pedestrian walkway on the far right of the bridge which has since been removed. In 1958 a new road bridge was built to the right of the suspension bridge. The arched bridge remains but traffic now mostly passes under the river in a new tunnel. The tiny little pedestrian suspension bridge to the left of the main suspension bridge was built in 1904. Possibly it was demolished when the new road bridge was built - there is no sign now of the tiny suspension bridge or the walkway on the big suspension bridge. On the left are the two tubes of Stephenson's railway bridges carrying trains between Chester and Holyhead. Still in use. |
