The main station building, a two storey stone built structure, was designed by W H Barlow who was responsible for the Midland Railway's St Pancras station in London. The building is located on the northbound platform. The station building was designed to complement Thornbridge Hall which stands adjacent to the northbound platform. When the station was built the hall was the home of George Marples a director of the Midland Railway. Mr Marples was provided with his own set of steps that linked his home to the northbound platform. Public passenger services ceased 10/9/62 (apart from one named passenger) and local Buxton-Matlock trains ceased 4/3/67. Other trains passing through ceased 1/7/68 asnd track lifting commenced in 1969. |
