Stechford Railway Station Built 1844 - At the junction between the Birmingham to Coventry line and the predominantly freight-only Stechford-Aston spur. The name Stechford may be a reference to the Stich or Stitch, a local tributary of the River Cole, although the Stitch is now entirely under culverts. The name Stechford was unknown until the construction of Stechford Station in 1844 On 28 February 1967, Stechford station was the scene of a train collision which killed nine people and injured 16

The sign reads "Romance and Rhythm". This is The Atlas. The Atlas Cinema was opened on 6th March 1938 with Diana Wynyard in "Cavalcade". The proscenium was 40 feet wide. Several cinemas of the era also had additional entertainment facilities such as a ballroom. Closed as a cinema on 30th May 1959 with Laurence Harvey in "Room at the Top" and Donald Wolfit in "Mail Van Murder". It became a wrestling venue for a while. Then the circle was divided from the main auditorium and became a bingo club, with the stalls level being converted into a garage. It has now been demolished.

Directly beneath the "-" sign in the top left corner is the Atlas Cinema .

Below that there is a canopy over the goods in/out bays .

In about 1946/7 a Harvard training aircraft had taken off from RAF Castle Bromwich and without warning went into a vertical dive , hitting the yard just by the canopy . The explosion was quite horrendous , a great ball of orange and black went up ; I witnessed this from Stechford Road , I was sat on the steps in the back garden .

I also saw The Stove as we knew it blazing from end to end after a bomber raid .
