This site here would be cleared in 1950 and tram tracks laid for it to become the "tramatorium", the final destination of the majority of London's trams as they were withdrawn in eight stages under LT's Operation Tramaway. The first car dealt here, on 2nd October 1950, was number 1656 which was stripped of any valuable scrap metal and then the remaining skeleton burned. This process continued until car number 179 met the same fate on 29th January 1953. |
