This is Blacketts Brickworks which was situated at the eastern end of a huge clay pit or quarry. Although it may have started as a pottery the main product in the 50s and 60s was house bricks. When this picture was taken the pit was only about 30 foot (10 metres) deep, but after WWII a much deeper hole had been dug, this starting at the built-up section of the cable railway. In between the taking of this picture in 1935 and the end of war the pit was extended southwards to within about 30 metres from Portrack Primary School, all at the 10 metre depth level. This resulted in the demolition of many of the allotment gardens seen in the picture
