|  Fort Darnet, built on an island in the Medway and completed in 1872. It, with its neighbour Hoo Fort, formed part of the inner defences on the approaches to Chatham Dockyard. Fort Darnet was armed with eight 9 inch rifled muzzle loading (RML) guns and three 7 inch RMLs . The fort was decommissioned before the First World War. During the Second World War, there was an observation post on its roof for spotting naval mines.
