A couple of steam locomotives downgraded to stationary boilers to provide steam for heating the coaches. Note the very high extension pipes in the chimneys.

I would like to hear from anyone who has information about this church/chapel. I have seen it marked on old maps of the area but it was not there in the mid 1950's. There was however a great deal of sandstone blocks dumped on Barney's that must have come from it. Was it damaged during the war?

It appears on a "bombing" map as St Lukes Mission Church. The base map dates from the early 1930s. I can recall no evidence of its remains in the 1950s.

Brickworks - the kilns were still there in the mid 1950's and we used to play in them. They were also used by the local tramps but we never really had any problems with them. By the late 1950's the whole of this area which we called Barney's became a refuse tip for Manchester City Council. I think the left corner of the picture would be where the Manchester Fort shopping area is now. The Irish World Heritage Centre is probably where the pond is centre left. The carriage works and sidings are now the Metro depot.

Shop where I used to live in the 1950's, in between Clibran St and Bunyard St. Our shop was the greengrocer's in the middle. This photo from the Manchester Archives shows this parade of shops in the mid sixties.
