 This appears to be an elevator to lift the tipped coal up to some sort of conveyor system between the two 'sheds' that feeds the coking ovens. The installation looks fairly new judging by the light colour of the 'sheds' |

| Wagon tipper - for discharging coal in one simple turn. Each wagon would have to be uncoupled before being turned over. While not being as efficient as automatic bottom discharge this was certainly an improvement over emptying wagons by hand.
The picture shows a wagon that has been turn through about 80 degrees, with it 'sign-written' side facing upwards. |

A beautiful high-quality photograph, how professional that photographer was. I lived in the street in the upper left corner from 1950-4: my grandfather moved there around 1907. The first sixteen houses in the row nearest the gasometer (top left) were demolished by enemy action in WW2. |
