This vertical lift bridge linked the former County Borough of Middlesbrough (on the south bank of the Tees) with what was then County Durham on the north bank of the Tees. The bridge deck lifted to allow ships travelling to/from Stockton or Thornaby to pass through. The bridge was opened in 1934 by the Duke and Duchess of York. Declining traffic on the river led to the bridge deck being bolted down finally in cmid 1980s. The bridge is still there and makes a marvellous monument to the local industrial history of Teesside. |
