Vic Beer & Sons had a smithy here for a long time 'till it relocated to the junction of Willeys Avenue and Tan Lane - now moved on to Peamore.

At the time of this photo this part of Fore Street was strictly called New Bridge Street but the whole of the steep hill has been commonly known as Fore Street.

This whole area was covered by the tannery buildings.

Even today we look up when we see an aeroplane overhead. In the thirties with the scarcity of aeroplanes it's no wonder almost every photograph has people looking up towards it. Here we see two people from the soap and candle works out in the May sun pointing out our photographer. What a sight that must have been from the ground, an open biplane with a pilot and photographer pointing a large box object at the subject!

The tannery. This building was, I believe, still occupied by JL Thomas Hide and Skin works until the 1970's. Renown locally for its horrible smell the company rendered dead animals skin and bones etc into soap amongst many other things.

Coneylake ran from this point cutting off the island from Exeter apart from two bridges shown on the 1932 OS Map.

This area is Great Shilhay and was in fact an island joined to the rest of Exeter by two bridges. Coneylake was the name of the leat/passage of water separating the island from the mainland but cannot be seen due to the photo angle.
