Cromwell Terrace - No.45 to 63 Cromwell Street. A block of ten, three storey weavers houses built around 1847. The weaving looms on the top floor were all powered by a shared 8 horse power steam engine housed 40 yards back from the houses. The engine also powered looms in similar houses around the corner in Peel Street. Weaving was also carried out along Stoney Stanton Road, Cobden Street and Bright Street (note the three storey buildings in the photographs). By the early 1860's the weaving trade had declined bringing unemployment and poverty. The top shops were eventually converted into accommodation. Cromwell Terrace was demolished in 1948 having suffered bombing damage in 1940 and 1941.

Because of the occupation of the Ordnance Works by the Admiralty from 1938 this area suffered badly from the bombing
