This is the line from Exmouth (off shot to the right) to Exeter Central (several miles off shot to the lower left.) The curving line which loops prominently round the left of much of this photo went from Exmouth (off shot to the right) to Budleigh Salterton then on to Sidmouth Junction. The line to Budleigh closed in 1967, but the line to Exeter and eventually on to Barnstaple and Okehampton is still open and thriving.

Southern Region railway to Exmouth station and then on to Exeter along the scenic River Exe route.

In 1930, it was the Southern Railway (not Region).

Note how the Southern Region railway line seems to act as a restraining obstacle to the extension of the town.

Not too sure of this statement. EPW023658 shows a good deal of development of the same vintage beyond the railway line.

My observation was made in the context of this photo and how the railway line appears to be a metal girdle restraining the town. I know Exmouth well and as you say by the time of this photo the town had in reality already developed well beyond the railway line.

A remarkable photo of synchronised urban planning, taken during the day, deserted with hardly a vehicle to be seen.

This symmetrical view of Exmouth is worthy of inclusion because of the synchronised symmetry of the houses bounded and seemingly restrained as they are by the metal girdle of the railway line. In addition even though the photo is taken at the height of the day there is hardly a pedestrian or car to be seen.
