Well-chosen site for a display hoarding for the Empire Cinema, visible all along Coventry Street to Piccadilly Circus. The Empire had closed as a theatre two years earlier.

Ham Yard, off Great Windmill Street. During the reign of Elizabeth I this area was green space known as Windmill Fields (later becoming Windmill Yard) after the brick windmill that stood here, from 1585 to the late 1690's. Venue for the so called 'Battle of Ham Yard' in 1927, an underworld razor fight between the Italian Mob, led by Harry Sabini, and the Elephant & Castle Boys for control of the lucrative protection racket extorting money from West End clubs and bars.
