According to photo captions in "Past and Present Companion - The NYMR" published 2001, ISBN 1 85895 187 9 and Volume 2 published 2004, this was not a goods shed but the 'retort and purifier house' for the station's small gas works, which provided gas for lighting the station. |

Though the station roof which is there now is not the same one as seen here........the original 1847 roof was removed in 1952 by British Railways, and a new roof to the original design was completed in 2011, for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. |
