Hi MB, Good spot on the building's roof - really interesting. As you know from the 1921 1:2500 OS mapping, the saw mill to the east of the long building is marked. On the previous OS edition (1897), the saw mill is marked and, to the west of the long building, an iron and brass foundry. No mention by the OS of that long building being an (ex) oasthouse/malting, but it does look like it. Just imagine the smells in town - steam and coal smoke from the railway, sawdust and timber...places must have been much more interesting for all the senses to appreciate. Saffron Walden station was on the line between Audley End, on the still-open line from London to Cambridge, and Bartlow on the now-closed line from Cambridge to Haverhill etc.
