This building behind wells mills could have been used by Newtons or Ripon Brothers there was a large hole in the floor and a lot of horse drawn carriages had been pushed down the hole into the basement,they were the type of carriages that can be seen on the front at Blackpool. Wells Mill, Ocupied by the army durin the second world war and was deralict after the army left, it was another play area for the northgate children,the favourite pastime was runing up to the top floor and sliding down the fire escape poles. The elliptical building is the Cloth Hall. According to "Huddersfield - a most handsome town" (which has few other pictures of it) it was commissioned in 1775, completed 1776, enlarged 1780 and again 1848 and further extended in 1864. It was odd in that it was largely built of red brick in a town where almost all other building were in local stone. It was demolished about 1933 and the Ritz cinema built in 1935 in its place, my wfe remembers Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones performing there in the in the early 1960's. The nearest cloth hall still standing is a square one in Halifax called the Piece Hall.	gardner	Monday 2nd of July 2012 05:04:16 PM
