Burrator Reservoir which holds approximately 1,000 million (a billion) gallons of water and serves Plymouth and district.
The reservoir also features in Steven Spielberg's 2011 film, War Horse. |

A truly unique photo. Whilst Burrator Dam was being increased in height by ten feet this temporary suspension bridge was built to allow access to the other side. When the Burrator Dam work was completed in September 1928 the suspension bridge was dismantled. This must be one of the last photos taken of the bridge.

Burrator Dam completed in 1898 to create the reservoir to supply Plymouth and surrounding areas with water. Also shown is the suspension bridge which was dismantled shortly after this photo was taken. The suspension bridge was constructed temporarily to give access to the other bank whilst 10 feet was added to the concrete dam height to increse the capacity of Burrator Reservoir. The suspension bridge was dismantled in September 1928, just after this photo was taken. |

There was a small railway halt at Burrator popular with hikers going onto Dartmoor. By the gate on exit from the small wooden platform was a notice "Beware of snakes." |
